I photographed this a couple years ago but I didn’t really like the results (the sun was out and high in the sky casting a weird shadow). So when I walked by it again recently I decided to try a second shot. What prompted me to take the shot in the first place was that these two pipes reminded me of a caricature of a couple that’s had a fight. Both are facing away from each other, fuming.

decay
Define irony: Destroy the original Maxwell Street Market through shady deals and back-door politics. Put up a gaudy high-end shopping district in its place. Then, use an empty storefront that you are apparently unable to lease to showcase photos of famous scenes from the original Maxwell Street Market that you have just destroyed. There are so many people in Chicago that hate its roots and its past and work long and hard to destroy any evidence of this. It is shameful.
