Cone flower and cone-flower head detail. Those white spots are not dust or dirt, but small bugs. The photo on the right is a 50% zoom view of the flower head.

the battle is nearly over

One of the last day lily flowers to bloom in our flower beds this year.
Perseid

This was the first time I’ve ever tried photographing a meteor shower. On August 11th, the Perseid shower gave us quite a great show. Heather and the kids and I went out to Galena, IL with my parents. Everyone got to see meteors and I managed to capture a couple with the digital camera. I definitely learned a lot (like, don’t use such a high ISO next time) but more importantly, had a good time. The meteor in this photo is in the upper-left corner. I uploaded a larger-than-usual version because it’s difficult to see.
island

From our July 4th week up in central WI. Nate with 2 cousins on the inflatable island just off shore.
whorl

After the clematis flower blooms and falls away, what’s left in the center is a seed head, the seeds all clustered together tightly. These are technically called achene.
