
I noticed this urban garden a couple weeks ago, but when the person or people maintaining it added the scare crow I knew I had to visit. This is on top of a semi-abandoned railroad bridge in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood. I have no idea if the garden is “guerrilla” or blessed by the city but either way it’s very cool.

Compositionally, this top-down view is kind of a “no-no” in terms of “best practices for photographing your kids.” But the moment (her position, her smile, her angle to the light) was fleeting and this 85mm lens throws such a wonderfully shallow depth of field. I focused on her eye and pressed the shutter button. With those brown eyes, how could I not?
